Fender Made In Japan Black Gold Precision Bass J Luna Sea Signature
Why is it special?
The Black Gold J Precision Bass is a limited-edition signature model by Fender Japan. This model is no longer in production. Not many of these were produced for the Japanese domestic market, which makes them even rarer outside of Japan. Aside from being a limited-edition signature model, this is just a great playing and sounding P-Bass with eye catching and unusual features like the reverse headstock and black and gold sparkle finish. Whether you’re familiar with J’s work in Luna Sea or not, this P-Bass is the business and a step above the standard P models made by Fender in Japan.
Condition
This bass is in Excellent condition, with only very fine surface scratches in the pickguard and very slight oxidation on the pickup poles. There are no noticeable dents, scratches or other damage anywhere else on the instrument. The truss rod works as it should and has adjustability remaining in both directions. The frets are in near new condition with very little if any signs of use.
Overview
Fun fact, the Black Gold finish was inspired by the vintage motorcycle helmets of the 1970’s. This model was inspired by the original “Black Gold” bass made for J by Fender Custom Shop Master Builder Greg Fessler. This version made in Japan inherits all the same specifications from the Custom Shop Black Gold.
The Custom Shop soft V-profile one-piece maple neck has a 7.25-inch radius, 20 narrow tall frets, and a bone nut. The neck measures 1.66 inches at the nut and 2.25 inches at the 12th fret. Depth is .81 inches at the first fret and .99 at the 12th fret. The quality hardware includes a vintage style 5-screw bridge and open gear clover shaped tuners with full-size baseplates. Interestingly, the body is made from ash, which may help provide some upper-midrange and treble sizzle for the tone. The finish is gloss polyurethane over the black gold paint. This bass weighs in at 9.44 pounds.
Electronics and Tone
This model features custom wound P-bass pickup developed for this model with cloth wiring and 250k pots. Fender has not provided details on the custom wound pickups, but the tone is solid, thick, and beefy with forward enough midrange to cut through a dense mix. This is a P-Bass voiced to excel in a rock setting while still sounding great in any musical situation you might encounter.
New D’Addario EXL 45-105 strings are installed (not pictured). This bass is set up bass for medium action (2.5mm E). The neck is adjusted for optimal relief, pickup height has been set, and intonation is dialed-in up and down the neck. This bass includes a good condition padded Fender gig bag.
