Description
Fender Made in Japan Limited Edition Super-Sonic
Why we love it
A very well crafted 2021 reissue of the distinctive Super-Sonic in great player’s condition. We find this Super-Sonic undeniably cool with its short 24-inch scale, dual humbuckers, reverse offset body and headstock, and classic color combo. This one has collected some mojo on its way to a lovely worn-in real relic finish in the future and is ready to keep rocking the doors off any venue. Great to play, great color combo, great look, great tone.
Condition
This guitar is in Very Good condition. There are signs of prior use such as light surface scratches scattered over the body. There are minor dents and scuffs primarily around the edges of the body. We have tried to capture these as well as possible in photos, some from multiple angles as they may get lost against the black finish and other reflections. None of these signs of prior use impact the playability or functionality of the instrument. There is some fret wear primarily between frets 3-7 under the 3rd string, but it is not causing buzzing or other issues with the current setup. A new Fender gig bag and original tremolo bar are included. The Super-Sonic weighs in at 8 pounds.
Overview
The 24-inch scale U-profile maple neck feels fantastic in hand. It’s both comfortable and easy to play yet substantial in a satisfying way. The neck measures 1.65-inches wide at its real bone nut and 2.0-inches at the 12th fret. Depth at the 1st fret is .87 inch and .98 inch at the 12th fret. A lovely slab of rosewood is used for the fretboard, which offers 22 medium jumbo frets and white dot position markers. A bullet style nut shines from the base of the reverse headstock and makes truss adjustment a breeze. The 6-Saddle Vintage-Style Synchronized Tremolo helps keep string tension up, with action feeling not too dissimilar from a Strat or Tele despite the shorter scale. The reverse offset basswood body features a lovely jet black coat of gloss polyester coated paint, and provides nicely focused and balanced tones in concert with the maple/rosewood neck combo.
Electronics and Tone
Dragster BB pickups in the neck and bridge position offer slightly hotter and warmer output than you’d find with single coil pickups and are a great match for the feel and focused acoustic tone of the guitar, especially when pushed into lightly-crunchy, lower gain overdrive tones. There is more than a hint of Jaguar snarl and aggression thanks to the shorter 24-inch scale, with the end result landing somewhere between Jag and Strat territory, though ultimately it’s own unique Super-Sonic rock machine. The Dragster pickups are more than capable of a variety of tones, with great clean tones on tap using either or both pickups.
