1991 Fender MIJ JBD-62 Jazz Bass 3 Tone Sunburst JB-Vintage US Pickups

Professor’s Notes

Built at Fujigen in 1991 for the Japanese domestic market, this JBD-62 is one of those rare MIJ Fender basses that quietly outperforms its price tier. You get genuine early-’90s Fujigen build quality, factory-installed US JB-Vintage pickups, and a resonant nitro-finished body that delivers classic Jazz Bass feel and tone without the vintage-market premium. This is a player’s vintage MIJ Jazz — alive, broken-in, and ready for decades more music.

Condition

This bass is in Very Good, honest player-grade condition and has been professionally serviced to ensure excellent playability and reliability.

Cosmetically, there are scattered scratches and small chips consistent with age, primarily on the back and near the control cavity edge, along with light buckle rash typical of a nitro-finished instrument. All notable cosmetic wear is documented in photos.

Structurally and functionally:

  • Neck is stable and properly set for medium-gauge (45–105) strings
  • Truss rod functions correctly, with limited tightening headroom (typical of vintage MIJ instruments)
  • A 0.25° StewMac neck shim has been installed for optimal geometry
  • Frets were recently leveled, crowned, and polished
  • Approx. 80% fret life remaining (previously said 60%, this was a typo)

Electronics have been comprehensively upgraded with a brand-new vintage-correct wiring harness, including:

  • US-made CTS pots
  • Switchcraft output jack
  • Orange Drop capacitor
  • Cloth wiring
  • Full-size relic-style Jazz Bass knobs

This bass has been fully inspected and professionally set up with:

  • New D’Addario EXL170 (45–105) roundwound strings
  • Medium action
  • Proper neck relief
  • Precise intonation
  • Optimized pickup height

It ships in a basic gig bag.
Optional: Fender FB620 padded gig bag (20mm) available for $60, or hard-case options — message us for details.

Overview

The JBD-62 was a Japan-only variation of Fender’s JB-62, produced at the legendary Fujigen factory during what many players consider the golden era of MIJ Fender production. Inspired by the 1962 Jazz Bass, this model pairs a lightweight basswood body with a thin nitro lacquer finish designed to balance durability with resonance.

The 3 Tone Sunburst finish, paired with a pepperoni tortoiseshell pickguard and aged-tint maple neck, delivers unmistakable vintage aesthetics. The familiar 1.5" nut width, oval C neck profile, and 7.25" radius rosewood fingerboard make this bass fast, comfortable, and instantly familiar to Jazz Bass players.

This is one of those instruments that feels right the moment you plug in.

Electronics and Tone

The factory-installed US-made JB-Vintage pickups are a standout feature and a major value add. They deliver everything players love about a great Jazz Bass:

  • Warm, supportive low end from the neck pickup
  • Focused midrange growl and articulation from the bridge
  • Clear, musical highs without harshness
  • Excellent blend and dynamic response

Paired with the upgraded wiring harness, the controls are smooth, quiet, and responsive, making this bass equally at home on stage, in the studio, or as a primary working instrument.
