Professor’s Notes
If you’re comparing this to a limited-run MIJ Fender Jazz Bass, good — that is exactly the right comparison.
The difference is that this Tokai is not leaning on the logo. It has to win on build quality, resonance, neck feel, balance, note separation, and real-world usefulness — and it does. At this price point, we think this is simply a stronger instrument than many contemporary MIJ Fender basses, especially the more standard-production examples that often trade more on the logo than the instrument itself.
The matching headstock and Gunmetal Blue Metallic finish give it the limited-run look. The feel, response, and clarity are what make it worth taking seriously.
Condition
This bass is in Excellent condition and has seen minimal prior use.
Fine superficial scratches are visible on the body and neck plate under close inspection. A very small surface chip is present on the lower horn as pictured, along with minor scuffs on the back of the lower bout as pictured.
The frets show almost no wear. The neck is straight with proper relief, and the truss rod functions correctly with adjustment available in both directions. The electronics are original and operating properly.
This instrument has been professionally set up with 45–100 roundwound strings, medium-low action, optimally adjusted relief, precise intonation across the fretboard, and properly balanced pickup height.
The original Tokai gig bag, tools, and warranty card are included.

Description
This 2022 Tokai AJB114 GMB/R is a Made in Japan Jazz-style bass finished in Gunmetal Blue Metallic with a matching headstock, rosewood fingerboard, and original Tokai gig bag.
Tokai’s AJB series follows the familiar 1960s Jazz Bass blueprint, but this is not just a “copy” in the lazy sense of the word. It is a thoughtfully built made in Japan instrument with excellent wood selection, superb fit and finish, a comfortable U-profile maple neck, substantial rosewood board, 2-piece alder body, and hardware/electronics choices that make it feel like a proper working bass rather than a spec-sheet exercise.
The AJB114 gives you the core things players want from a great J-style bass: clear note separation, articulate attack, useful midrange texture, comfortable balance, stable tuning, and the familiar two-volume/tone layout that makes a Jazz-style bass so flexible in real-world playing situations.
The JB-Vintage MK3 pickups deliver the expected J-style range with a refined, musical voice. The neck pickup gives you rounded low end and supportive fundamental clarity. The bridge pickup adds definition, midrange growl, and articulation without getting harsh. Blended together, the pickups provide a balanced, focused voice that sits naturally in a mix.
The Gunmetal Blue Metallic finish is also a major part of the appeal here. It gives the bass a more limited-run look than a standard vintage color, especially paired with the matching headstock, while still keeping the overall design clean and classic.
If you are looking for the feel and quality of a higher-end MIJ J-style bass without paying extra just for the more familiar logo, this AJB114 deserves serious consideration.
