Boss PH-2 Super Phaser – 1986 Black Label

Condition

This effect pedal is in Excellent condition, with scattered chips, scuffs and signs of use and age on the exterior. There are signs of a prior leak in the battery cavity (pictured). This does not impact sound or functionality. We replaced the rubber screw grommet, thoroughly cleaned and tested the unit with a 9v battery and compatible power supply. All functions are operational. Build date of April 1986. The original packaging and instructions are not included. This unit requires a BOSS ACA power supply or a 9V battery. Have questions about powering Boss ACA 12v pedals? Professor’s Notes

The PH-2 is peak MIJ Boss: a phaser that doesn’t just swoosh — it adds real depth and motion and makes the guitar feel bigger, like the whole rig is breathing in time. Mode I gives you that classic, chewy sweep; Mode II gets deeper and stranger without losing the note. If you think you “don’t like phasers,” this is the one that usually changes minds.

Professor’s Tips

  • Set-and-forget classic: Mode I, Rate ~10–11 o’clock, Depth ~1–2 o’clock, Res ~9–10 o’clock for that chewy, musical movement that never steals the part.
  • The PH-2 secret sauce: use Resonance sparingly—it’s the difference between “expensive swirl” and “too much seasickness.”
  • Make it sound huge (without sounding like an effect): slower Rate, higher Depth, lower Res. This is the “recorded guitar got wider” setting.
  • For the wilder side: Mode II, bump Res a touch, and keep Rate slower than you think—this gives you that syrupy, almost rotary-leaning sweep without going cartoon.
  • Placement: usually after dirt for the most controlled, studio-friendly swirl. Put it before dirt only if you want the drive to chew on the movement (cool, but easier to overdo).
