Professor’s Notes
Canyon is a compact, practical delay built for players who want one dependable delay solution without committing to a single flavor. At its core, it behaves like a classic digital delay — clean, repeatable, and easy to place — with the option to reach into warmer analog-style territory when needed. Think of it as a modern stand-in for familiar DD- and DM-style roles, not a delay lab.
Description
The Electro-Harmonix Canyon Delay & Looper is a compact digital delay pedal that combines eleven delay modes with a built-in looper in a pedalboard-friendly format. Rather than chasing extremes, Canyon is designed to cover the most common delay needs reliably — from clean digital repeats to darker, analog-style echoes — with controls that stay intuitive and fast to dial in.
In its standard digital modes, Canyon delivers clear, precise repeats reminiscent of classic early digital delays. Switching to Analog mode produces darker, softer repeats that approximate vintage BBD-style delays, without the noise or maintenance concerns of older circuits. Additional modes expand into tape-style delay, octave and shimmer textures, reverse delay, and more — available when needed, but never required.
Controls are straightforward: Delay sets the time, Feedback controls repeat decay, FX Level adjusts the wet/dry mix, and the Mode selector chooses the delay type. Tap tempo with tap divide makes it easy to sync delays to a song’s tempo, while the onboard looper (up to 62 seconds) covers basic practice, writing, or performance needs. We find Canyon works best as a utility delay — something that handles everyday delay duties first, with extra options available without complicating the board.
It’s not meant to replace dedicated, single-voice delay pedals for players who live inside one specific sound. Instead, Canyon offers a compact, cost-effective way to keep multiple familiar delay roles available and under control.
Quick Start
- Start in Digital mode: Set FX Level low, Feedback moderate, and Delay to taste for a clean, classic echo.
- Decide clean vs warm: Use Digital modes for precise repeats; switch to Analog mode for darker, softer echoes that sit behind the note.
- Set Feedback before mix: Get the number of repeats right first, then raise FX Level until the delay supports the part.
- Use tap tempo sparingly: Sync delays when timing matters; otherwise, manual delay time is often quicker and more musical.
- Treat extra modes as optional: Reverse, shimmer, octave, and tape-style modes are there when a part calls for them — not as defaults.
