Professor’s Notes
The Big Muff 2 is the Muff timeline that never happened — a recovered 1970s design brought to life with help from Josh Scott. It feels like a blend of an Op-Amp-style punch and an original Muff’s grind, but with a more aggressive edge — same endless sustain and compression, just with more bite and “alive” upper harmonics so riffs don’t disappear in a band mix. If you love Muff behavior but want it sharper, brasher, and more immediate under the pick, this is the alternate-history version that makes you grin.
Description
The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff 2 is a fuzz distortion built from a rediscovered design by original Big Muff engineer Bob Myer — essentially an “alternate branch” of Big Muff evolution that didn’t make it to production in the 1970s. The result isn’t a replacement for a Ram’s Head or Op-Amp style Muff — it’s its own thing: more open, brighter, and a touch more unruly, with a lively top-end bite that helps it cut instead of disappearing into low-mid fog.
What it’s for (the one job): classic Muff sustain with a sharper edge — when you want the Big Muff behavior (compression + endless sustain) but with more articulation and a slightly more aggressive, raw feel.
PN’s quick start (a usable default in 30 seconds):
- Start with Sustain at 10–11 o’clock, Tone at noon, Volume to unity.
- If it’s too bright: roll Tone back to 10–11 o’clock.
- If you want more cut for a band mix: push Tone to 1 o’clock and back Sustain slightly.
- For “chewy breakup,” roll your guitar volume down a touch — it cleans up into a gritty, usable drive texture.
