Straight from a forgotten 1970s schematic, the Big Muff 2 is a fresh twist on a legend—classic Muff sustain and saturation with a sharper, more mischievous edge and bold feel. The resurrection comes with help from Josh Scott of JHS, whose deep-dive circuit archaeology helped uncover and realize a forgotten Big Muff design straight from Bob Myer’s old notebooks. It’s brighter, scrappier, and wonderfully distinct—an alternate-history Muff that finally gets its moment in the sun.

The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff 2 is a rare opportunity to play a vintage circuit that technically never existed—until now. Based on a rediscovered, handwritten design by original Big Muff creator Bob Myer, this version takes a parallel evolutionary branch from the classic Big Muff lineage. Instead of the smoother, more familiar voice associated with later models, the Big Muff 2 reflects earlier experimental thinking: bold, slightly unpredictable, harmonically lively, and noticeably brighter than its modern cousins.

Controls stay true to the era: Volume, Tone, and Sustain. But the response is distinctly its own—open, gritty, and bristling with vintage oddity. Roll back your guitar's volume and it shifts into chewy breakup; dig in and it sings with aggressive, unpolished energy. It’s equal parts artifact and instrument, capturing the soul of a 1970s experiment that nearly slipped through history.
