Professor’s Notes
The Big Muff with Tone Wicker is a one-trick pedal — and that trick is excellent. With the Tone circuit bypassed, the sound opens up in a way the standard Muff never quite does: fuller, more immediate, and far easier to place in a mix. Think less scooped wall-of-fuzz and more present, usable sustain that feels like a veil has been lifted.

Description
The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker is best understood not as a flexible Muff variant, but as a very specific version of the circuit done right. While it retains the familiar Muff controls and layout, its real value lives in the Tone switch set to off.

The Tone switch bypasses the traditional tone stack, delivering a fuller, more immediate signal that works well with darker amps or when maximum thickness is the goal. Some of this comes from increased output, but the more important change is how the midrange shifts forward — open, direct, and far easier to place than a traditional scooped Muff. Compared to a Ram’s Head-style Muff, the Tone Wicker retains some of that smooth sustain but with a noticeably more present midrange.

The Wicker switch opens up the high end, adding clarity and presence that helps the fuzz cut through denser arrangements, without undoing that forward midrange character. Used this way — Tone off, Wicker in or out — the pedal becomes a focused, reliable Muff voice that works especially well into clean or slightly driven amps.

The standard Tone-on mode remains available if you want the original Muff behavior on hand, but we find this pedal shines when treated as a purpose-built tool, not a do-everything fuzz. It’s not about options — it’s about getting this sound quickly and consistently.

Quick Start

  • Start with the point: Set the Tone switch OFF. This is where the pedal opens up and the midrange comes forward — don’t judge it with Tone on.
  • Choose openness next:
    • Wicker OFF for a thicker, smoother voice closer to a Ram’s Head feel (but more forward).
    • Wicker ON for added clarity and cut when the mix gets dense.
  • Set Sustain conservatively: Start lower than you expect; this circuit gets full and saturated quickly once the mids are engaged.
  • Adjust Volume last: Tone-off mode has more output — use Volume to balance against bypass rather than pushing the front end unintentionally.
  • Treat Tone-on as optional: The traditional Tone control is there if you want the classic scooped Muff sound on hand, but this pedal’s strength lives with Tone bypassed.
