Professor’s Notes
The Crash Pad is a dedicated analog percussion voice — not a drum machine, not a multi-effect, and not something that quietly blends in. It’s for players and producers who want controlled, synth-based hits, sweeps, and bursts that sit on purpose in a track. If you’re looking for one focused source of analog percussive texture, this is it.
Description
The Electro-Harmonix Crash Pad is a fully analog percussion synthesizer based on EHX’s late-’70s drum synth designs, updated for modern rigs. It generates short, punchy sounds ranging from low, electronic thuds to sharp, filtered noise bursts, with controls designed to shape each hit rather than build full rhythmic patterns.
Sweep, Resonance, Filter, and Decay controls define the pitch movement, tone, and length of each sound, making it easy to dial in tight, percussive hits or longer, more animated sweeps. The Crash Pad is triggered externally via a dedicated trigger input, allowing it to be fired from a drum pad, sequencer, synth, or other compatible source.
An external audio input allows guitars, synths, or drum machines to be routed through the Crash Pad’s analog filter, adding movement and texture beyond simple percussion duties. We find the Crash Pad works best as a specialized sound-design voice — something you reach for intentionally when a track needs motion, impact, or edge rather than traditional drum sounds.
Professor’s Tips
- Think hits, not beats. The Crash Pad excels at individual accents and percussive events rather than continuous rhythms.
- Trigger cleanly. Use a consistent trigger source for predictable results; variations in trigger strength will affect response.
- Shape with Decay first. Set the length of the sound before fine-tuning Sweep and Filter.
- Use external audio sparingly. Running signals through the filter works best for adding movement, not replacing your core tone.
- Leave space in the mix. Crash Pad sounds are meant to be heard — give them room instead of burying them.
