Professor’s Notes

The Percolator fills the space between overdrive and fuzz without sounding like a conventional version of either. It can be chewy, sharp, sputtery, explosive, or surprisingly responsive—and the Bias control makes the transition between those personalities part of the instrument.

The Percolator works especially well after a familiar low- or medium-gain foundation, taking an established core tone somewhere more aggressive, harmonically complex, and fuzz-adjacent.

Some fuzz pedals deliver one dominant sound, while many overdrives smooth out the rough edges that make a part interesting. The EHX Percolator instead offers a wider range of unstable, character-heavy gain—from lightly broken transistor drive to gated fuzz and pseudo-octave textures—without requiring a complicated control layout. As a second-stage drive, it does more than simply add gain: it introduces grind, compression, upper-harmonic bite, and, at more extreme Bias settings, deliberately gated or octave-like textures. Use it to make choruses feel larger, give leads a rougher edge, or push a controlled rhythm sound into something more aggressive and unstable.

It can also function independently as a raw transistor drive or full fuzz, but its clearest role is as a more distinctive second stage escalation drive.

Description

Inspired by the cult-classic Harmonic Percolator circuit of the 1970s, the Electro-Harmonix Percolator expands the original concept with a practical set of modern controls.

The Harmonics knob controls input gain, moving from dynamic overdrive into increasingly saturated fuzz. Bias changes the operating character of the gain circuit: lower settings produce smoother drive and distortion, while higher settings introduce pseudo-octave overtones, sputter, and gated decay. Balance controls the overall output level.

The Drive/Fuzz toggle changes the basic clipping structure. Drive mode removes the clipping diodes for a raw, chewy transistor-drive response. Fuzz mode engages the diodes for heavier saturation and more aggressive fuzz textures.

An internal trim pot adjusts overall gain and the range of the pseudo-octave response. The pedal also includes a latching/momentary footswitch: tap it for normal on/off operation, or press and hold for temporary bursts of fuzz or momentary bypass.

Quick Start Settings

Raw Transistor Drive

Bias: 9–10 o’clock
Balance: Set slightly above unity

Open, crunchy, and responsive. Start here for an unconventional overdrive sound that retains pick attack.

Explosive Fuzz
Fuzz mode
Harmonics: 2–3 o’clock
Bias: Noon–1 o’clock
Balance: Set to taste

A thick but articulate fuzz with more edge and harmonic movement than a typical sustaining fuzz circuit.

Gated and Sputtery
Fuzz mode
Harmonics: 2 o’clock or higher
Bias: 3 o’clock or higher
Balance: Compensate as needed

Use higher Bias settings for broken, gated decay and aggressive texture. Adjust Harmonics and Bias together to tune the response to your pickups.

Pseudo-Octave Texture
Fuzz mode
Harmonics: High
Bias: Around 2–3 o’clock

Play higher on the neck and experiment with the neck pickup for more pronounced octave-like overtones.
