Condition
This bass is in Very Good condition and is a solid player grade instrument with no issues interfering with playability or functionality. There are scattered scratches and chips across the surface of the body, primarily on the back and edge of the lower bout. The most notable dents, scrapes and chips around the perimeter of the lower bout are pictured, however this paint color does a very good job of hiding imperfections in normal lighting. There are a couple very shallow dents on the back of the neck behind the nut and 1st fret that do not interfere with playing comfort. There is a small paint chip on the lower side of the neck pocket. The frets show minor signs of wear (no significant wear spots) and have plenty of life remaining with no buzzing or dead frets. The truss rod is in good working order with adjustability in both directions. The neck is straight with no signs of warping or waviness. The tuners and control cavity cover have developed a very pleasing mild patina. There are no areas of separation in the neck binding and the gloss finish on the neck is perfectly smooth. The electronics are in perfect working order with no modifications.
This bass has been thoroughly inspected and professionally set up with D’Addario EXL 110 strings, medium action with optimally adjusted relief, intonation dialed in up and down the neck, and pickup height set. This beautiful bass is well balanced and weighs 9.9 pounds. A brand new Fender FB620 gig bag is included. Hard case available upon request, please send us a message for cost and options.
Overview
An unusual rarity produced exclusively for the Japanese market in the mold of a ’75 Jazz Bass, this bass is unusual for having a PJ pickup configuration, alder body, rosewood fretboard, and 4 bolt neck. Unlike later versions of this model made by Dyna Gakki, this model features US-made pickups. It is likely this bass was made by Tokai Gakki given the serial number and stamping on the parts. Tokai-made Fenders have a very distinct character in both feel and tone that we often find preferable to contemporary and current CIJ/MIJ Fender basses. This bass is no exception.
Swathed in old Candy Apple Red paint, this bass exudes class and mystique. Depending on the angle and intensity of light, the metallic finish shifts from deep red tones to almost black. The vintage spec 7.25-inch radius maple neck is topped by a beautifully figured chocolate colored rosewood fretboard with masterfully applied creme binding and while pearloid block inlays. A head-side bullet type truss rod nut and large trapezoidal tuning peg plates round out the period appropriate appointments. Beautifully crafted, the maple neck is shaped in a comfortable, easy playing U-profile (measurements above). The gloss finish on the neck is smooth and flawless. The fretwork is outstanding and lower action is possible if that is your preference.
The tone from the JB75-PJ is outstanding, with plenty of low-end punch and midrange focus and growl. Effortlessly find the right tone for any genre of music by shifting between your favorite classic Precision and Jazz bass tones or find a new sweet spot in between. There is warmth without lacking upper midrange and treble clarity and definition. The US-made pickups are the same as those used for the American Standard series, offering excellent focus, growl, and clarity from the bridge pickup, and round low end depth and punch from the neck pickup. Controls are traditional neck volume, bridge volume, and master tone.
