Overview
A high specification rarity produced exclusively for the Japanese market as a ’75 Jazz Bass reissue, this bass is unusual for having a premium ash body with stunning figuring, rosewood fretboard (vs maple) and Cherry Sunburst finish. It is likely this bass was made by Tokai Gakki around 2007-2008 given the serial number, stamping on the parts and construction methods.
The vintage spec 34-in scale one piece maple neck is topped by a gorgeously figured 7.25-inch radius chocolate colored rosewood fretboard with expertly applied creme binding and white pearloid block inlays. A 3-bolt neck joint with micro-tilt mechanism, head-side bullet type truss rod nut, and large trapezoidal tuning peg plates round out the period appropriate appointments. The slim 70s-style neck sports a period appropriate U-profile (width and depth measurements above) feels amazing in hand and is instantly familiar. The gloss finish on the neck is smooth and flawless and fit and finish of the 20 medium jumbo frets is outstanding.
Electronics and Tone
The tone from the JB75-100US is the stuff of Jazz Bass dreams, with plenty of low-end punch and midrange focus and growl for days. Thanks to the ash body, tight and focused bass is complimented by fast attack and note definition while the rosewood board slightly rounds and warms up the top end. The US-made Jazz Bass single coil Jazz pickups are the same as those used for the American Standard Jazz, offering excellent growl, spank and cut from the bridge pickup and rounder low end depth and thump from the neck pickup. Controls are traditional neck volume, bridge volume, and master tone. The high-quality original made in Japan 250k pots are paired with a 0.047µF poly film cap. No modifications are noticeable to the standard Jazz Bass wiring and everything is in great working order.
