Condition

This bass is in Very Good (near Excellent) condition. More photos available upon request. The protective plastic is still on the pickguard. There are minor fine scratches and scuffs across the surface of the body. There is a tiny chip on the edge of the lower side of the neck pocket and two tiny dings near the neck plate(pictured). There are a few shallow dents on the perimeter of the lower bout near the control cavity (pictured). The frets show very few signs of wear and have plenty of life remaining with no buzzing or dead frets. The truss rod is in good working order with plenty of adjustability in both directions. The neck is straight with no signs of warping or waviness. The tuners and bridge have developed a slight patina. Alpha 250k pots were installed by a prior owner, but the electronics are in perfect working order. We replaced the crumbling original pickup foam to ensure appropriate pickup height.

This bass has been professionally set up with D’Addario EXL 45-100 roundwound strings, medium action with optimally adjusted relief, intonation dialed in up and down the neck, and pickup height set. This beautiful bass is well balanced and weighs 9.7 pounds. A brand new Fender FB620 gig bag is included. Hard case available upon request for an additional fee, please send us a message for details and options.

Overview

A rare specification produced exclusively for the Japanese market as a ’62 Jazz Bass reissue, this bass is unusual for having a flame maple neck and Sonic Blue finish and likely a shop order model. Given the serial number and stamping on the parts, this bass was likely produced by Tokai Gakki for Fender Japan.

The stunning vintage spec flame maple neck is topped by a 7.25-inch radius beautifully figured chocolate colored rosewood fretboard white dot markers. A 3-bolt neck joint with micro-tilt mechanism, head-side bullet type truss rod nut, and large trapezoidal tuning peg plates round out the period appropriate appointments.

The beautifully crafted maple neck is an easy playing classic U-profile with average taper (width and depth measurements above). The vintage tint gloss finish on the neck is smooth and flawless, showcasing the dramatic striping of the neck figuring. The fretwork is outstanding and lower action is possible if that is your preference.

Electronics and Tone

The tone from the JB62 offers classic 60s Jazz Bass tone in spades. There is tight, controlled bass and rounded but defined treble with slight midrange emphasis thanks to the alder body. The US-made Jazz Bass single coil pickups are the same as those used for the American Standard Jazz, offering excellent focus, growl, and clarity from the bridge pickup, and round low end depth and thump from the neck pickup. The original pots were replaced with quality Alpha 250k units with a 0.047µF polyester foil film Green drop capacitor. Controls are traditional neck volume, bridge volume, and master tone with no modifications to circuit function.
