The Fcon-V is a clever solution for players who love the character of their gain stages but want the finished signal to feel more controlled and cohesive. Designed to work after overdrive, distortion or preamp pedals, it can smooth out hard peaks and level differences without changing how those gain stages respond to your guitar. Think less “compressor effect,” more final polish for the drive section.

Why This Matters: A good gain sound can still have awkward dynamics. Chords may leap forward, harder attacks can become disproportionately loud, and switching between gain stages can change apparent level more than you want. The Fcon-V lets the drives keep doing what they do well, then helps organize the result.

Description

Flying Teapot is a small Japanese effects builder known for thoughtful, unconventional takes on familiar pedal concepts, and the Fcon-V is one of its more distinctive designs.

Rather than following the traditional guitar-compressor formula, the Fcon-V takes inspiration from studio-style dynamics control. Flying Teapot specifically conceived it as a “total compressor” for use after distortion and other gain stages, allowing the pedal to control the resulting signal rather than necessarily compressing the guitar before gain.

Threshold determines when compression begins, Ratio sets how strongly the signal is compressed, and a separate Limit control establishes an upper level for the signal. Gain and Volume provide additional level control, while the three-position Sensitivity switch changes attack and release behavior together. An LED meter provides a useful visual indication of how hard the compressor is working.

Used toward the end of a drive section, the Fcon-V can make chords, single-note lines and different gain sounds sit in a more consistent range while preserving the character of the pedals creating those sounds in the first place.

Flying Teapot also notes that balancing Gain against Volume can subtly change the response, from a more open presentation to a somewhat warmer feel.

Quick Start Settings

Post-Gain Leveling

• Threshold: Start around noon
• Ratio: Low to moderate
• Limit: Set just above your normal playing level
• Sensitivity: Middle position
• Gain / Volume: Match bypass level

Place the Fcon-V after your primary gain pedals, then lower Threshold until harder chords and attacks begin to come under control while normal playing still feels open.
