Professor’s Notes
The AJ is exceptionally inviting to play, but there’s enough firmness and backbone under the strings to make you want to dig in and explore its dynamics. Tonally, it lands on the articulate side of warm—mid-forward with sparkle, a tight low end, and none of the excessive bridge brightness or neck-position mud that can come with this pickup vocabulary. It feels familiar, but remarkably well resolved as an evolved design with unique qualities on offer.
Description
The John Page Signature AJ is a hand-built American electric guitar designed by John Page, co-founder of the Fender Custom Shop and a builder whose career has been defined by refining familiar guitar ideas rather than simply reproducing them.
Its materials are traditional, but the execution is deliberate: a select alder body, quarter-sawn maple neck, and Indian rosewood fingerboard, all built by hand in the USA to John Page’s specifications. The workmanship on this example is exceptionally clean, from the neck fit and fretwork to the finish and hardware installation, but more importantly, that precision translates directly to the way the guitar feels—solid and resonant without becoming stiff or overbuilt. John Page Signature guitars are hand-crafted in the USA by master builders and inspected before shipment.
The AJ’s foundation is immediately recognizable, but the design systematically revisits details players tend to accept as fixed. The body incorporates front and rear contours, a sculpted heel, and improved upper-fret access, while the neck attaches using machine screws and threaded inserts rather than conventional wood screws. John Page describes this neck joint as part of the guitar’s approach to transferring an articulate, resonant character between neck and body.
The pickup pairing is equally intentional. At the bridge, the Bloodline JP-3T retains the clean snap, attack, and immediacy of a great T-style pickup, but its reverse mounting angle places the treble side farther from the bridge. At the neck, the JP-3P brings the fullness and midrange presence of a P-90 while staying unusually clear and focused. John Page describes the JP-3P as having a full bottom end, punchy mids, a clean top end, and more clarity than a typical P-90, while the JP-3T is voiced for clean snap with punch and growl available as you push it.
Together, the two pickups feel exceptionally well matched, with three genuinely useful selector positions and a noise-cancelling middle setting. The result preserves much of the immediacy and articulation associated with a great T-style guitar while avoiding the extremes that can make the bridge overly sharp or the neck overly thick.
That balance is representative of the AJ as a whole. The 12" radius and Signature Medium C neck create an easy playing surface without losing substance under the hand, while the compensated brass saddles, reverse-angle bridge pickup, threaded neck inserts, and bass-justified fret markers each contribute to a design that feels carefully considered rather than merely different.
Black Metallic suits that philosophy particularly well. At first glance it reads as an understated black finish, but under changing light the metallic character becomes much more apparent, giving the surface a subtle depth that is difficult to capture fully in photographs.
Each John Page Signature AJ includes a custom John Page Signature-embroidered G&G hardshell case.
