Professor’s Notes
Blackheath is bass distortion with discipline. It delivers grind and harmonic weight while keeping the low end solid, from subtle character and cut to full-on wall-of-sound drive.Â
Description
The Laney Black Country Customs Blackheath is a triple-mode bass distortion built to cover the three core jobs a bassist actually needs from dirt: grind, tube-like push, and subtle character that makes a clean tone feel more alive.
You get:
- DIST 1 – aggressive, classic distortion pedal character
- DIST 2 – asymmetrical distortion with a more natural, tube-like feel
- OVERDRIVE – lower-gain drive for subtle grit and “alive” clean enhancement
The control set is tuned for bass reality:
- Gain sets how hard the distortion stage is driven
- Range sets how much low end is allowed to distort (min = huge low-end growl, max = tighter low end and a punchier, mid-forward voice)
- Colour shapes brightness vs darkness (lower = darker)
- Volume sets output level
It’s also built like a real working tool: transparent fully buffered operation, silent switching, ultra-low noise circuitry, and a tri-colour LED so you always know which mode you’re in on a dark stage.
Professor’s Tips
- “Make the bass speak” drive (default): Start in DIST 2, set Gain to taste, Range around noon for control, then use Colour to keep the top end present without getting brittle.
- Big wall-of-sound grind: Use DIST 1, keep Range lower for more low-end distortion, and set Volume to unity (or a slight lift) so the energy stays consistent.
- Subtle “recorded bass” thickness: Use OVERDRIVE, low Gain, moderate Range, and a slightly darker Colour—this is the “always-on character” lane.
- If your low end gets fuzzy in a mix: Turn Range up before you start cutting bass elsewhere. That’s what it’s for.
