Professor’s Notes
Monolith is a “one pedal, three solved gain voices” kind of tool — tight when you need it, expressive when you want it, and surprisingly useful as a low-compression drive/boost. The Range control is the secret: it lets you decide how disciplined the low end hits the distortion, so big chords stay readable and lead lines stay intentional.
Description
The Laney Black Country Customs Monolith is a versatile analog gain pedal built to cover a wide span of drive textures without feeling like a compromise box. It’s designed to stay articulate, respond to pick attack, and keep chords intelligible even when you’re into higher gain.
The layout is deceptively simple — Distortion, Range, Tone, Volume — but the interaction is the point:
- Distortion sets gain and sustain, from low grit to heavy saturation
- Range controls how much low end is allowed before distortion (0 = full range, 10 = maximum low-end reduction). This is how you tighten up muddy pickups, keep palm-mutes from blooming, and make high gain feel “in control.”
- Tone shapes overall voicing from warm/smooth to bright/cutting
- Volume balances levels or pushes the front end of your amp
A 3-position Mode switch gives you three distinct behaviors:
- D1 (Orange LED): more compressed, smooth, and thick without losing definition
- D2 (Blue LED): softer compression, more dynamic and expressive with touch
- O/D (Purple LED): lower compression “overdrive” behavior — great for pushing amps or stacking
Monolith uses silent switching and fully buffered operation for consistent signal integrity on a real-world pedalboard.
Professor’s Tips
- The “default rock” setting: D2, Distortion at noon, Range ~3–5, Tone to taste, Volume to unity. Dynamic, clear, and sits easily.
- Tight high-gain rhythm: D1, Distortion up, Range ~6–9 (this is where the palm-mutes stop being a problem), Tone slightly darker if needed.
- Amp-push / stack-friendly drive: O/D mode, Distortion lower, Volume higher, Range ~3–6 depending on your pickups. Great into an edge-of-breakup amp.
- If the rig feels “too big” on the bottom (common with louder cleans): Increase Range first before you start carving bass on the amp.
