Professor’s Notes
The EOD is less about imitating a particular amp than recreating the way a great amp responds to the player. Pick lightly or roll back the guitar and it cleans up beautifully; lean into it and the drive comes forward with surprising range and immediacy. It’s an especially strong choice for players who want the guitar and their hands—not another footswitch—to control the transition from clean to overdrive.
Rig Role
Role: Touch-sensitive low-to-medium gain overdrive
Why This Matters: Some drive pedals give you essentially one gain texture at whatever level you dial in. The EOD is built around movement: picking attack and guitar-volume changes become an active part of controlling how much the pedal distorts.
What This Pedal Solves
The EOD is particularly useful when:
- You want clean, edge-of-breakup and driven sounds without constantly changing pedal settings
- Typical overdrives feel too compressed or disconnected from picking dynamics
- You actively use the guitar’s volume control as part of your playing
- You want lead sustain and richness without giving up articulation and touch response
The result is an overdrive that rewards interaction rather than simply adding another fixed layer of gain.
Description
MASTERTONE developed the EOD — Emotional OverDrive — around the expressive drive tones associated with Larry Carlton playing a ’57 Goldtop Les Paul through a Dumble amplifier. Rather than approaching that inspiration as a straightforward “Dumble-in-a-box,” the goal was to capture the musical relationship between picking strength, guitar volume and the amount of overdrive produced.
That responsiveness is the heart of the EOD. Compared with a conventional overdrive, the amount of breakup changes considerably with the player’s touch. Light playing can remain remarkably clean, while stronger attacks bring out crunch and sustain without requiring a change at the pedal.
Controls are deliberately simple: Level, Tone and Gain. The uncomplicated layout keeps the focus on the guitar and the player rather than extensive pedal adjustment, and the circuit was developed to work with both single-coil and humbucking pickups.
MASTERTONE itself is a collaboration between three Japanese specialists: TONE BLUE handles concept and sales, Blackberry JAM handles circuit design and production, and SAITO COLOUR WORKS finishes the enclosure in lacquer. The guitar-inspired hardware and finish reinforce the same idea behind the circuit: this is an overdrive meant to feel like part of the instrument rather than something layered on top of it.
Quick Start Settings
Touch-Controlled Drive
- Level: 5–6
- Tone: 5
- Gain: 5
Start with all three controls near the middle and set Level slightly above unity. From there, use picking strength and the guitar’s volume control to move between cleaner rhythm sounds and more driven lead tones before reaching for more Gain.
