Professor’s Notes
The MOD11 isn’t about collecting modulation effects — it’s about having one great-sounding compact motion tool that can cover the most common modulation roles without committing to a single flavor. You don’t buy this to explore everything; you buy it so chorus, trem, phase, or rotary are always available when a part needs movement. Think utility first, personality second.
Description
The Electro-Harmonix MOD11 is a compact digital modulation pedal that brings eleven classic modulation types into a single, practical unit. Rather than focusing on deep parameter editing, the MOD11 is designed to give fast access to familiar modulation roles — chorus, tremolo, rotary, phaser, flange, vibrato, pitch, and filter-based effects — in a format that’s easy to place on a working pedalboard.
Each modulation type is selected via the Mode knob, with the Depth and Rate controls handling the primary movement characteristics. The Volume/Colour control adjusts output level or a mode-specific parameter, depending on the effect selected. Additional secondary parameters are available when needed, but the core sounds are accessible without menu diving.
Tap tempo (internal or via an external switch) makes the MOD11 especially useful for tempo-based effects like tremolo and rotary, while Momentary mode allows brief bursts of modulation for accents rather than always-on use. We find the MOD11 works best as a problem-solving modulation pedal — something you reach for when a track needs motion, not when you’re building an identity around modulation itself.
It’s not meant to replace dedicated, single-effect pedals for players who live inside one modulation sound. Instead, it’s a compact way to keep multiple modulation options on hand without expanding the board or overthinking the decision.
Quick Start
- Choose the role first: Decide what kind of movement the part needs (chorus, trem, rotary, phase) before touching any controls.
- Start subtle: Set Depth low and Rate moderate; the MOD11 is most useful when modulation supports the part rather than calling attention to itself.
- Use tap tempo where it matters: Tremolo and rotary effects benefit most from syncing to the song’s tempo.
- Treat secondary controls as optional: The core sounds are designed to work without digging into hidden parameters — adjust only if you need refinement.
- Place after gain: MOD11 generally sits best after drive pedals and before delay/reverb for clear, controlled movement.
