Professor’s Notes
The Ram’s Head Big Muff Pi recreates the coveted 1973 Violet Ram’s Head circuit, prized for its articulate sustain and smoother midrange compared to other Muff variants. It’s a faithful, compact reissue that delivers vintage tone without vintage prices.
Description
The Electro-Harmonix Ram’s Head Big Muff Pi Distortion/Sustainer is a reissue of one of the most sought-after Big Muff circuits — the 1973 “Violet Ram’s Head.” Known for its clarity, sustain, and more balanced voice, the Ram’s Head delivers a fuzz tone that cuts through a mix with definition while still retaining the thick sustain the Big Muff family is known for.
With controls for Volume, Tone, and Sustain, operation is simple and intuitive. The reissue stays true to the original circuit while updating the design with true bypass switching and a compact, pedalboard-friendly enclosure.
Compared to the woolier Russian or the aggressive Op-Amp Muff, the Ram’s Head is smoother and more refined — a favorite among classic rock guitarists for both rhythm and lead work. Vintage originals are scarce and expensive, but this reissue makes one of the most desirable Muff tones accessible and reliable for modern players.
