Professor’s Notes

There are countless pedals that borrow from a Tube Screamer; the #8 is for the player who actually cares which Tube Screamer. SUMO STOMP recreated a specific 1981 TS808, serial no. 126700, built around a highly regarded Malaysian op-amp, and the result captures that warmer, rounder vintage feel exceptionally well. Compared with the drier, slightly more modern #9, the #8 is softer through the mids, sweeter around the edges and especially good at making an already-responsive amp feel even more alive.

Professor’s Tips

• Don’t think of it only as a boost: the #8 has enough texture and harmonic character to work as the primary overdrive into a clean or lightly breaking-up amp. Start around Drive 10–11 o’clock, Tone noon, Level to taste and adjust from there.

• For the classic amp-push job: keep Drive low, raise Level, and use Tone to match the amp. You’ll get the familiar tightening and mid focus of a great TS808 while retaining the softer attack and natural harmonic bloom that make the vintage circuit so appealing.

• What makes the #8 different: compared with the drier, slightly more modern character of the JRC2043DD-based #9, the #8 is warmer and rounder, with a smoother midrange and sweeter overall response. Think classic early-’80s TS808 character rather than simply “less bright.”

• Gain up works better than you might expect: there’s enough detail and note separation to use the #8 as a genuine overdrive rather than treating Drive as a control that always belongs near zero. Higher settings bring out more of its warm, harmonically rich character.

• Into an already-driven amp: this is arguably the sweet spot. Use lower Drive and enough Level to push the front end—the #8 tightens the lows, fills out the mids and lets the amplifier provide the final layer of compression and saturation.

• With humbuckers: keep Drive moderate and use Tone to preserve the attack. The #8’s rounder voicing can make a thick guitar sound wonderfully fluid without becoming overly aggressive.

• With single coils: this is classic territory. Let the Drive come up a little more and use the midrange to give the guitar body and sustain while retaining the natural articulation of the pickups.
