This effect pedal is in Excellent (near mint) condition, with only very light signs of careful use. It has been thoroughly cleaned and tested. All controls, switching, input and output are fully operational.

Includes the original box, instructions and rubber feet.

The #9 can be powered by a 9V battery or standard center-negative 9V DC power supply.

Professor’s Notes

There are countless pedals that borrow from a Tube Screamer; the #9 is for the player who actually cares which Tube Screamer. SUMO STOMP painstakingly recreated a specific early TS-9 built around the JRC2043DD chip, and the result has its own personality: dry, articulate, airy through the mids, with fine harmonic detail and a lively high-frequency edge. It still gives you the familiar mid-forward push, but feels more open and slightly more modern than the softer, rounder TS sound many players expect.

Professor’s Tips

• Don’t think of it only as a boost: the #9 has enough texture and harmonic character to work as the primary overdrive into a clean or lightly breaking-up amp. Start around Drive 10–11 o’clock, Tone noon, Level to taste and adjust from there.

• For the classic amp-push job: keep Drive low, raise Level, and use Tone to match the amp. You’ll get the familiar tightening and mid focus of a great TS without making the whole rig feel overly compressed or congested.

• What makes the 2043DD version different: compared with the brighter 4558-style voicing, the #9 emphasizes the unique dryness, airy midrange, fine harmonic texture and high-frequency exuberance of the early 2043DD-equipped TS-9.

• Gain up works better than you might expect: one of the #9’s strengths is maintaining clarity as Drive increases. The sound stays textured and articulate rather than collapsing into a soft midrange blur.

• Into an already-driven amp: this is arguably the sweet spot. Use lower Drive and enough Level to push the front end—the #9 focuses the lows, adds articulation and lets the amp supply most of the saturation.

• With humbuckers: try a slightly lower Drive setting and open the Tone control until the attack comes back. The drier voicing helps thicker pickups stay articulate.

• With single coils: let the Drive come up a little more. The airy mids and fine upper harmonic content fill out the sound without stripping away the guitar’s natural cut.
