2014 Tokai LS113S Cherry Sunburst (Made in Japan)

Professor’s Notes
The LS113S takes the time-honored Les Paul formula and injects it with the raw, punchy attitude of a dual P-90 configuration. Handcrafted in Japan, this model features premium tonewoods, classic set-neck construction, and a gorgeous Cherry Sunburst finish over a solid maple cap. The slab flame top and clean vintage aesthetic pair beautifully with the biting clarity and dynamic response of Tokai’s P-90 pickups—making this a versatile choice for players who want old-school feel with a bold sonic edge.

Overview
This LS113S stands out for its blend of premium build quality and vintage-correct tone at a price that still undercuts comparable big-brand models. Built with a two-piece select mahogany body and a solid maple cap, the LS113S delivers a classic tonewood formula. Wrapped in a vibrant Cherry Sunburst finish, the thin-skin poly coating enhances resonance while showcasing the sublime figuring of the maple top. Carefully selected mahogany delivers warm, rounded lows and rich midrange, while the maple cap adds clarity, snap, and top-end definition—resulting in a harmonically balanced tonal foundation ideal for expressive lead work and dynamic rhythm playing. Expertly fit vintage-style cream binding is applied around the perimeter of the body and neck, completely smooth with no gaps or notable seams. Set-neck construction ensures optimal sustain and resonance while the hybrid ’50s/’60s U-profile neck provides optimal comfort and vintage feel with excellent upper fret access and playability. The 24.75” scale and rosewood fretboard add warmth and smoothness to the attack, making it equally suited for chord work and lead playing.

Tone and Electronics

The Tokai MK2 PAF-style humbuckers capture the open, woody response of vintage Alnico II magnets. The neck pickup offers syrupy mids with excellent string definition, while the bridge adds vocal midrange bite without excessive top-end sizzle. Compared to a USA Gibson LP, this Tokai offers slightly more high-mid transparency and a tighter bass response—especially noticeable with edge-of-breakup tones.
