Professor’s Notes

Minerva isn’t “a JCM-in-a-box” — it’s a hot-rodded Marshall-style crunch with a more modded stack attitude: thick, amp-like, and touch-responsive without getting overly bright. If you want a British drive voice that feels like an amp channel getting pushed, this one delivers.

Condition

This pedal is in Very Good condition with scattered cosmetic scuffs/scratches on the housing (no impact on sound or function).

Description

The Vivie Minerva is a Made-in-Japan overdrive that behaves like an amp voice, not a generic drive pedal. The core character lands in a hot-rodded Marshall-style crunch / modded stack zone—more weight, chew, and harmonic density than a sharp, tight “JCM800 bite,” with a feel that responds to pick attack like a real amp channel coming alive.

This is why Minerva excels in two different roles:

Into a real amp/stack: use it like a full-on drive channel—set for edge-of-breakup and push with your hands, or open up the gain for thicker rock crunch. The voicing stays “amp-forward,” making it a strong primary gain stage rather than a flavor-on-top OD.

As the amp at the end of your chain: Minerva also shines late-chain into a clean power amp, powered cabinet, or an IR/cab-sim solution, where you want the pedal to supply the core drive voice. If you’re building a pedalboard rig where the “amp” lives on the board, Minerva can be that anchor.

Professor’s Tips

  • Generally leave Minerva near the end of your pedalboard signal chain. It behaves more like an amp channel and likes to be driven more than do the driving of downstream gain stages.
  • For “modded stack crunch” rhythm: run Gain in the lower-to-mid range, set EQ for clarity, and let your picking do the rest—Minerva’s strength is how amp-like it reacts.
  • As a late-chain “amp” into IR/power: place Minerva after your other drives and before your cab sim/IR box (or before a clean power amp). Think “last gain stage = amp voice.”
  • Into an already bright amp: try backing off the top end and letting Minerva supply the thickness—this is a great way to get a bigger, more authoritative crunch without fizz.

Controls & Switching

  • JC / MS switch: two voicing modes intended to better match different amp styles (combo vs stack), but both are usable on any rig
  • TUBE control: adjusts saturation/“amp feel” from tighter/cleaner to thicker and more harmonically saturated
