Professor’s Notes

The Dirty Boy Jr. has the bite, texture, and slightly unruly character we want from a great vintage-style fuzz, but with considerably more range than the usual one-good-sound formula. Run the Fuzz high and it becomes open, aggressive, and surprisingly articulate, then roll back your guitar volume for excellent cleanup into gritty, dynamic breakup. The six-position Frequency control makes it easy to reshape that character around different guitars and amps without polishing away what makes fuzz fun.

Rig Role

The Dirty Boy Jr. works especially well as a foundational vintage fuzz controlled from the guitar or a more dramatic second-stage gain sound. Place it early in the signal chain, set the Fuzz relatively high, and use your guitar’s volume control to move between gritty textures and full saturation.

Many vintage-style fuzz pedals deliver one dominant sound that either works with a particular guitar and amplifier or does not. The six-position Frequency selector gives the Dirty Boy Jr. more room to adapt, substantially changing the character and response of the fuzz to suit different pickups, amps, gain structures, or arrangement needs.

Description

The Warm Audio Dirty Boy Jr. Fuzz recreates the original Dirty Boy Afro Fuzz circuit in a compact, pedalboard-friendly format.

Inspired by classic British fuzz designs, the circuit combines rich midrange character, natural compression, and touch-sensitive response with Dirty Boy’s distinctive six-position Frequency selector. It can move from gritty, dynamic breakup to thick, harmonically saturated fuzz while remaining remarkably responsive to pick attack and guitar-volume changes.

The Fuzz control determines gain and saturation, while Volume provides enough output to match the bypassed signal or push the front end of an amplifier. The six-position Frequency selector reshapes the overall character of the fuzz, giving the circuit substantially more range than a traditional two-knob design.

That added control makes the Dirty Boy Jr. easier to integrate than many vintage-style fuzz pedals, while retaining the aggressive attack, compression, and harmonic character that make those circuits compelling.
